The Rise of Social Networking Sites
Facebook, Twitter, Friendster and MySpace are huge names in the Social Networking Sites industry. This week, Salvagers.Net takes a look at how these social networking sites can impact business, and the technology used in doing so.

Social Networking and the Impact on Technology
The rise of Social Networking Sites is a pheomemon that is not new to even the layman user. From Facebook to Friendster, Flicker to Flixster, social networking sites have become more than just connecting and keeping in touch and up to date on the happening on the lives of friends, family, colleagues and even penpals - it has become a solution for sharing, asynchronous meetings and general discussions. In a way, it has transformed the use of the social networking site from just connecting with friends to sharing photos, music, videos, events planning and management and games.

How this impacts the community is astounding because through these social networking sites, people are exposed to new cultures and new things, no longer limited to the culture and environment of their local country. Through such sites, the human interaction on an international border has increased to the point where teenagers and working adults alike no longer have to rely on cell phones and the Short Messaging Service. International calls no longer have to cost a bomb - Skype, Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger all have free video calls that allow a user to make a call to another computer, completely for free. In light of the corporate world, there are even social networking sites that cater to the corporate environment, a site which allows users to find other users in the same office and network with them, bring the benefits of the social networking site to the corporate environment and increasing productivity.

In the business world however, Facebook and Twitter are used as methods to build a brand image through Brand Awareness, Online Reputation Management Tools, Recruiting, Learning about new technologies and competitors and as a leading generation tool to intercept potential prospects. Using such methods, companies are able to drive web traffic to their websites as well as to encourage consumers and clients to have discussions on how to improve products and services. Students can also use these networking sites to get to know working professionals for internships and job opportunities.

For entrepreneurs and small businesses, social networking sites can be used to build their contact base, acting as tools for relationship management tool for companies selling products and services.

Windows Tip of the Week
The Creative Commons Add-In for Office is a free utility that licenses your Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents in just a few clicks. The drop-down menu sits on a tab (on the Ribbon menu for Office 2007) and uses a wizard to guide you through choosing the appropriate license. Unfortunately, it’s Windows only, no Mac.

Create a spare user account. A fresh new user account gives us a new, clean, untouched set of User Preferences to work with and troubleshoot — usually the first move made in troubleshooting because it resets all applications to default and it also rules out any corrupted user Preferences.
