Virtual Machines
Professional editions of Microsoft's Windows 7 touts itself to come with a virtualization software that is both stable, low on memory footprint and boasts excellent system integration. In truth, Microsoft is not the first to think of the the virtualization system - many businesses and IT professionals have already begun to use such software virtualization techniques to save on costs of buying new hardware and to test new systems before deployment to corporate use.

What is a Virtual Machine?
Virtual Machines are software implementations of a machine or computer that executes programs like a real machine - this means that you are running the "guest" operating system on top of the actualy operating system that you are using. In this case, we are refering to System Virtual Machines which allow the sharing of the underlying physical machine between different different virtual machines, each running its own operating system.

Advantages of Virtual Machines
The main advantages of using system Virtual Machines are that multiple OS environments can co-exist on the same computer isolated from each other, that the virtual machine can provide an instruction set architecture (32-bit / 64-bit) that i different from that of the real machine and also provide application provisioning, maintenance, high availability and disaster recovery.

VMware Workstation / VMware Fusion for Mac
VirtualBox for Windows, Linux and Mac (Free, Open-source, highly recommended)
